Gray's Summer Project: And we shall be known as…

  • alan · 7 months ago
digital renaissance: Gray’s Design Collective... ?
  • Ross · 7 months ago
    A Gray Summer.
    A Summer in Gray.
  • Gregor · 7 months ago
I'd say no to digital renaissance as not all the work will be digital, it could be anything, doesn't have to be digital. Although like the use of renaissance though.

Gays School of Tarts. haha. joke.

Erm...You Know What We Did This Summer: Gray's Design Collective. haha.

A Spectrum of Grays: Design Collective.

A Spectrum of Gray. Kinda relates to the fact that it could be anything, and the variety of work produce from grays students.

I'll try and think of some more. Any body got some good ones?

    Hey,

We could just use the GSP.

    GRAYScale - this i like.
  • Jonny Lewery · 7 months ago
I like GRAYscale. That's total sweet. It might be a bit cliche but it sounds good. It connotates design but not discipline which is what this project is about.

I kind of shot myself in the foot by calling it a summer project. Craig Shand and I have been discussing how we could take this further after the summer and even start a design society for the school. It's something we definitely need as we don't really get much out of our lecturers after first year trip wise or studio visits. We could organise lectures given by the big names based in the uk. It would benefit us as much as it would the school. It would all depend on how succesful this is but I'd still like the word Summer out of the group name.

GRAYscale sounds sweet...think we have a good one there
  • Andy · 7 months ago
has to be spelt with a big S.

    GRAYScale

    not GRAYscale.

    IMO
  • Craig · 7 months ago
Yup GRAYScale. Tis a good one
  • Jonny Lewery · 7 months ago
Lots of votes for GRAYScale. Any other suggestions? What would the domain name be?
  • Ross · 7 months ago
I totally agree with your idea for a society, its alright coordinating with 5710 to help get funding and contacts for getting speakers up, but the design / grays side of the university would definetly benefit from regular lectures chosen by the students.

Glad you like the GRAYScale. I havent got any idea about domain names, guessing www.grayscale.co.uk is taken.

As for wanting summer taken out, you could always just call it GRAYScale and then just add sub titles to it to suit, so for the summer it could be GRAYScale: Summer Projects : Lecture society : Whatever.
  • Cooler Ross · 7 months ago
I'm a fan of GRAYScale I must say.

    grayscale.co.uk is taken
    grayscale.net is a holder
    grayscale.com is a holder
    grayscale.org doesn't exist.
  • laura · 7 months ago
    grays create.
    create at grays.
dsgn (a play on the word design)
    design press
or how about the size the research sheets we do i.e 30x42 thats A3

i'm thinking more of how the name would look, we are design students so why not have a logo? I do like the name GRAYScale though.
  • Callum Hopkins · 7 months ago
what about Grays Anatomy? ha ha no im joking it's terrible!!!

here's a few ones for you to think about (for abouit two seconds! ha ha):

    gray area
    The Gray Modren
    (tak on tate mordern)
    Wonderdog
(apparently, grays is the "underdog" of the art schools in scotland!)
    Gray's Matter/ Grays Matters
(dunno which is best. check out link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grey_matter")
    Summer Grays
    (oxymoron...ithink :s)

pretty rubbish ones here me thinks!
  • Jonny Lewery · 7 months ago
I like your pun on Grey Matter but it's already been taken by an american punk band apparently. Damn them :P ! Also it was the school slogan one year as well :( .
  • Jonny Lewery · 7 months ago
I was just looking into the colour grey on wikipedia. Did anyone notice the Hex value for lightgrey is #D3D3D3 ? Coincidence? 3 courses in the communication design programme. dthree. d3. D3 etc. Just another thought… could be mistaken for that awful attempt at a third Mighty Ducks movie which I swear I have never seen. :P
  • Robert Patience · 7 months ago
Right I'm certainly in for this summer thing I'll be holding the fort I guess for product and Think gray'scale is an awsome name for the project. Keep me in the loop.
  • Robert Patience · 7 months ago
was looking into grayscale it goes like this 8-bit is grayscale then more is colour. 24 bit is "true colour" so how bout somethin like 24bit grayscale? just an idea ... bit shit dunno?
  • Laura H · 7 months ago
I like the grayscale name too (could be written grayScale perhaps?) It suggests a wide range of talent, personalities etc. Plus it's simple and catchy. I like the D3 idea too, but grayscale has a more personal touch (D2 mighty ducks was good though)

Maybe the first project could be coming up with a logo once the name has been voted on??
  • Robert Patience · 7 months ago
Workin late on the grayveyard shift ha ha Massive LOL BOOOOOM!!!
  • Ross · 7 months ago
Good shout on the logo / branding as the first project. A nice straight forward one to get into.
  • Gregor · 7 months ago
Ian Cargill and Grays started a popular semi-commercial design group called 50k, or 50K, or Fifty K, that was intended to get students out their in the commercial world and get them live briefs, the 50K was linked to K = Black obviously through CMYK, and 50% of K is Gray. We could resurrect the name and group? (although the project idea is slightly different would still be cool) And give our respects to Ian Cargill who has retired this year unfortunately, sure that would make the legend have a chuckle at the resurrection of his design group, keepin the dream alive!!!

    Also 50k sounds expensive! haha!

    What you think?
  • Gregor · 7 months ago
Now that you mentioned the Mighty Ducks, its all i can think about when you mention D31
  • Gregor · 7 months ago
that was meant to be D3! not D31
  • callum hopkins · 7 months ago
yeah i like 50k. grays kin of has bad connitatiosn to it. these are a few from wiki: boredom, reality, seriousness, neutrality, dullness, mediocrity, undefinedness, and .
  • Gregor · 7 months ago
design groupAKA - as in 'also known as' as we are coming up with so many names, why not cover all our bases?

    or just groupAKA, designAKA, AKAcollective.

Or could maybe go for something more pwerful sounding like

    "KeepDesignAlive"

"MakeDesignHistory" - as in put yourself in the history books of design, not kill design.

    "Make Design the Future"

    "KeepGraysAlive"

Print related - 200GSM, paper stock is measured in gsm, could have no. of students then gsm, for example if there were 20 of us, could have 20gsm, gsm could stand for grays student member, grays student movement, grays school movement, etc etc. I understand there are quite a lot of digital work though.
  • Gregor · 7 months ago
could we manipulate dpi? dots per inch relates to almost all of us

could stand for design p..... i...... any ideas?
  • Gregor · 7 months ago
OR!! could have our own filetype.

instead of .pdf, or .eps, could have design.gsa Design, gsa is grays school of art

    food for thought
  • Jonny Lewery · 7 months ago
Holy shit Gregor you are on fire! :P I can't keep up lol. design.gsa looks pretty sweet and has a nice sound to it. It doesn't connotate a filename too much either which is pretty cool. It creates a definitive gap between the two words but brings them together at the same time. Nice!
  • Jo · 7 months ago
GSA is also Glasgow School of Art though...
  • Laura H · 7 months ago
Yeah that's what I was thinking, a lot of people could mistake it for that
  • Jonny Lewery · 7 months ago
    I always forget that :( .
  • Jonny Lewery · 7 months ago
Oh 50K is bangin! I really like that. It's already got a distribution list setup in Outlook as well. I never thought about CMYK. So obvious. There is already a studioAKA so I don't think we can use that lol. I dunno if we should make a statement in the name. It would then give us a definitive purpose.

Has anyone checked out Wolfram|Alpha? http://www37.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=what+is+... Could provide some inspiration.

1548? First recorded use of the word design. Maybe too similar to 5710.
  • bianca · 7 months ago
    My winner is GRAYScale!
I see '50K' always as the '50.000' rather than making
    the connection to CMYK xD
  • Claire · 7 months ago
GRAYScale is my winner so far like...
  • Jonny Lewery · 7 months ago
Unsung? We are the new blood so we haven't got the recognition we hope to achieve.
  • Andrew · 7 months ago
GRAYScale and 50K are the best so far in my opinion.
