Gray's Summer Project: The Plan.

  • Gregor · 7 months ago
Meeting would be good i think,

I was thinking, I know you mentioned doing it not just for summer but all the time. Obviously come September, shit might get hectic with degree show stuff kickin off, so for everyone taking part in this could maybe put a part of their studio fund aside and could get a book of the best (or even all) made or something along those lines. Could host fun things to do like people did this year, the closest to the pin contest, to raise money put towards the book and we could sell/give away the book at our degree show, everyone who takes part could have a pile at their section of their degree show. Sound good?

Another name, relating to Gray's Underdog art school reputation...

That's a great idea. That's exactly the kind of thing I'd like to see this blossom into. By continuing after the summer I was meaning more as a society than keep up the projects but it could be something we could potentially start when we get a break off and the years that come after us could continue on. I wish we had done this earlier!

For the meeting I suggest the Union as a gathering place, since our studio(s) will be closed over the summer for a refurb.

Love the idea of keeping the project running after the summer :-).

When do you wanna meet? Union seems to be a good option. We could also ask which studio is available for the people doing resits this summer and using that one as well maybe.

If everyone involved gets on Flickr and we all use the same tag for this project, we can easily pull everything relevant into a blog - Tumblr, Wordpress or whatever. If it's all in the one place, when it comes to choosing 'best of' stuff for a book we could just count up the comments/reblogs.

I was hoping to take advantage of free stuff like that including vimeo. I will come up with a standard for submitting your work and if we all follow that it should be simple... in theory. We could post up the work on the Monday and then have a poll posted on the Tuesday although this would mean one winner unless there is a tie. If you think about it though there won't be too many projects if they are every second week so we could probably have everyone piece of work in the book or each person's top 3 etc.

I thought there wasn't going to be a winner? :P

I'll stand by that I don't think there's a need for a meeting. I'm pretty sure the bare essentials of such a project can easily be ironed out online. I mean there isn't an awful lot to discuss is there?
  • Jonny Lewery · 7 months ago
The problem with doing it online is I can't tell what everyone is thinking. I can just make a final decision on everything but I'm trying to please everyone. It's much easier to discuss something in person. These two topics have taken a couple of days and we have to wait for replies. If we all meet up for a couple of hours we can come away with a solid plan that everyone has agreed on and then just start. It's not like it's a massive deal. If we even have just 5 or 6 of us there in the one place who can all agree on something and everyone is happy with what we have decided on (name, domain, submission rules etc.) then we can just fire on.

Yeah, meeting at the union sounds good? can we make it during the week at some point coz I work 9-6 sat n 10-7 sun.

Jonny, Im staying at craigs for some of the week, so I would be up for meeting up nearer the end of the week some evening. Like wednesday/thursday.

I reckon the flickr ideas pretty good, fairly straight forward. I dont see the amount of work being produced as huge, even as a group. So it wouldnt be unfeasable to put a selection of everyones work in. It could be an idea to work towards a wee cv/about page with a few examples of work to follow. And the easiest way to get everyone a copy is put it together on blurb or something similar? if you want to start printing and binding books on mass it may get fairly pricey? But it may be worth it.

Maybe thats better left to discuss when you see how much work you have gathered? The idea of making a wee book is great though.

Roughly how many people are signed up to take part in this? Are they all from RGU or have some association with RGU?
  • Jonny Lewery · 7 months ago
30 people. 1 or which is not associated with RGU at all.

Friday evening could be ok by me.
  • Jonny Lewery · 7 months ago
That's cool man. I think it's too short notice anyways.
  • Ross · 7 months ago
No bother. I'll probably see you if your still in town anyways. I think you can get away without a meeting for that many people anyways. Aside from a vote on the name the rest should be pretty straight forward, initially anyways.

I reckon its better to let something like this evolve at its own pace and not over think it too much.
